Frequently Asked Questions about Gold Rings
Why are the differences between karats? Pure gold is 24 Karats – Meaning it is 100% pure gold. 18K gold has a 75% purity level, 14K has a 58.3% purity level, and 10K has a 41.7% purity level. They are then mixed with various alloys, some to include nickel. You would think 10K would be the less desirable, however that is not always correct as 10K is not as “soft” as higher karats, therefore making it more durable.
Why does gold turn your finger black? Elements such as Sulphur and chlorine will react with the alloys in the gold jewelry, causing it to corrode and turn black, therefore blackening the skin underneath. Although gold plated rings can cause the same issue, but this is usually because you are allergic to the nickel used in gold plating. I would like to add our gold rings are pure and not plated.
Which is better White or Yellow Gold? Both choices are a solid decision for a wedding band, however white gold is a good choice if you are prone to allergic reactions (such as green finger) to the alloys used in yellow golds. White gold is rhodium plated which eliminates the potential for a skin reaction with alloy metals.
